About me

I am a freelance writer and design manager trading under the name of Writing Design Communication. I also have a fine art practice. Key concerns are environmental and ethical issues, including raising awareness of these through my work as a business writer, design manager and fine art practitioner.

Work of which I’m proud

A good practice guide for London Underground covering LCD information displays onboard tube trains and accessibility requirements, working with Transport Design Consultancy. It sounds a dry topic but the end document summed up detailed research involving workshops with disabled people, the elderly and people whose first language was not English, with the aim of improving journeys on the tube for everyone.

Working with environmental consultancy Giraffe Innovation, I drafted a discussion paper describing options for cutting carbon emissions within a particular industry sector for consideration at a high level internationally. I have also co-written a paper for design company The Brewery with fellow 26er Hester Thomas about the potential implications of the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive on the future design of consumer electronics.

Embarking on a five-year programme of part-time study for a fine art degree in 2003, I felt a sense of achievement with the outcome of my theoretical research and dissertation at the end of the course in 2008. I chose to compare the placing of art in airports as wayfinding devices, as a means of adding authority to public spaces, with the enactment of everyday rituals in art galleries by artists such as Liam Gillick and Rirkrit Tiravanija. This involved an analysis of aesthetic theory from the eighteenth century until the present day.

    Getting in touch
My website is work in progress – a case of cobbler’s shoes, I guess. However, I have updated my LinkedIn profile (I can sense the collective groan from all of you who eschew social networking) so please visit the link below if you would like further information about my work.

Please get in touch if you think I can help with your writing assignments. Thank you.
